Choosing when to go is one of the first decisions when planning a trek in Nepal. The Himalaya can be visited all year, but each season brings very different weather, views and crowds.
Autumn (late September to November): the classic season
After the monsoon rains wash the air clean, autumn brings the clearest mountain views of the year, stable weather and comfortable temperatures. It is also Nepal’s festival season, with Dashain and Tihar. The popular trails, such as Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, are at their busiest, so book flights and teahouses early.
Spring (March to May): flowers and warmer days
Spring is the second great trekking season. Days are longer and warmer, and the rhododendron forests below 3,500 m turn red, pink and white. Haze can build up at lower altitude in May, but higher up the views stay spectacular. It is also the Everest climbing season, when base camp is full of expedition tents.
Winter (December to February): quiet trails
Winter skies are often crystal clear, and the trails are wonderfully quiet. Nights are cold at altitude and some high passes, such as Thorong La, can close after heavy snow. Lower treks like Poon Hill and cultural tours are excellent at this time of year.
Monsoon (June to August): green valleys
The summer monsoon brings rain, cloud and leeches at lower altitude, and flights to Lukla are often delayed. Mountain views come and go, but the valleys are lush and green and the trails are empty. Rain-shadow regions north of the main Himalaya stay much drier.
Our advice
If you want the best chance of clear views, choose October–November or April. If you prefer peace and quiet, consider early December or late February. Whatever the season, talk to us and we will suggest the right trek for your dates.
