Nepal has hundreds of trekking routes, and choosing your first one can feel overwhelming. The right trek depends on three things: how much time you have, your fitness, and what you most want to see.
Less than a week: Poon Hill or Mardi Himal
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is the perfect introduction: low altitude, comfortable lodges and a famous sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. For something a little wilder, the Mardi Himal trek follows a grassy ridge right up to the foot of Machhapuchhre in just five days from Pokhara.
About a week: Langtang Valley
The Langtang Valley trek starts with a drive from Kathmandu, so no flights are needed. In eight days you reach glaciers and yak pastures at Kyanjin Gompa and can climb Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 m.
Ten days or more: the big two
The Annapurna Base Camp trek takes you into a spectacular amphitheatre of 7,000–8,000 m peaks, while the Everest Base Camp trek is the ultimate bucket-list walk to the foot of the world’s highest mountain. Both are achievable for fit first-timers with the right preparation.
